Impact of Brexit on your ferry crossings

Since January 1, 2021, the separation between the United Kingdom and the European Union has been definitively established. This has had repercussions on many areas of the economy, and travel has not been spared. However, before going into the details, rest assured: the impact on your ferry crossings is minimal!

1/ Identity documents

After a transition period lasting until September 30, 2021, new rules come into force. As of October 1, 2021, it is no longer possible to use your national identity card (CNI) to enter the UK. Whether you’re a resident of Europe, Switzerland or the European Economic Area (EEA), you’ll need to present a valid passport.

Bonus: for a tourist stay of less than 6 months, you don’t need to apply for a visa. All you need is your passport!

In certain specific cases, you can still use your CNI until December 31, 2025:
– You have (pre-)settled status.
– You have a frontier worker permit
– You are an S2 Healthcare visitor
– You have a Swiss service provider visa

2/ Care

When it comes to medical care in the UK, the Brexit has brought no changes. Make sure you have your European health insurance card (EHIC). It is valid in all EU countries, as well as Switzerland, EEA countries and the UK.

CAUTION: the EHIC is not an alternative to health insurance, as it does not cover all medical procedures. Be vigilant, and check before you leave if your insurance covers your needs.

If you are undergoing medical treatment during your stay, make sure you have your prescription with you, as you may be asked for it on arrival.

3/ Driving and telephoning

Drivers must hold a valid driving license. It is not compulsory to have an international or British driving license.

If you’re traveling by car, you’ll need to take certain precautions. You’ll need proof of insurance, issued by your insurer, stating precisely :
– Name of insurer
– Vehicle license plate
– Period of insurance coverage.

If the vehicle is registered in the EU, you’ll need to show the green card.

To keep in touch with your loved ones, we recommend that you contact your telephone operator to find out about roaming charges, if any.

4/ Customs

When crossing to the UK, it’s perfectly possible to take goods with you. Whether it’s consumables or gifts, you need to find out what customs rules apply. As in other countries, you won’t be subject to taxes if you respect the personal quantities of goods authorized.

If you exceed your personal limits, you will be required to make a declaration before entering the country. You should also be aware that there is a maximum declaration limit.
