Cheap ferry: how to pay less?

Save up to 40% on your ferry tickets by following our expert advice. The price of a ferry crossing varies considerably depending on several factors that you can optimize.

Book your ferry ticket early

Booking in advance is the most effective way to get a cheap ferry ticket. Ferry companies use dynamic pricing: the earlier you book, the less you pay.

Optimal booking periods:

  • 2-3 months in advance: Average savings of 25-40%
  • 1 month in advance: Savings of 15-25%
  • 2 weeks in advance: Savings of 5-15%
  • Last minute: Standard or higher prices (except for flash offers)

For crossings during the high season (July-August) or to North Africa during Ramadan and Eid, we recommend booking 3-4 months in advance. Places fill up quickly and prices increase significantly as the departure date approaches.

Traveling with or without a vehicle

Transporting your vehicle accounts for 60-70% of the total cost of your ferry ticket. A foot passenger pays an average of €50, while the same journey with a car costs €180-250.

Cost-benefit analysis:
If your destination has good public transport links, car rental services, or if you are staying in a city, traveling without a vehicle can generate substantial savings. For example, for a stay in Corsica with car rental on site (€200-300/week), you often save money compared to the cost of transporting your personal vehicle.

However, for large families, long stays (2+ weeks), or itineraries requiring constant mobility, taking your vehicle with you remains more economical and practical.

Choosing the best ferry departure times

Ferry departure times directly affect the price of your ticket. Ferry companies offer different rates depending on demand.

Cheapest times:

  • Night crossings: 20-30% cheaper + savings on a night’s hotel accommodation
  • Midweek departures (Tuesday-Thursday): 15-25% cheaper than weekends
  • Early morning times (before 8 a.m.): 10-20% discount
  • Late departures (after 8 p.m.): 10-15% discount

Conversely, avoid Friday evening and Saturday morning departures during the summer, which have the highest prices.

Compare ferry companies and departure or arrival ports

Don’t limit yourself to just one ferry crossing. Sometimes, departing from a nearby port can save you a lot of money.

Examples of optimization:

  • Marseille-Corsica vs Toulon-Corsica vs Nice-Corsica (differences of €20-40)
  • Barcelona-Tangier vs Algeciras-Tangier (difference in duration and price)
  • Marseille-Algiers vs Sete – Algiers (alternatives depending on your departure point)

Our ferry comparison tool automatically analyzes all these options to find you the best value for money.

Ferry booking Guide

How to book a ferry? Step-by-step guide

Booking your ferry tickets with SmartFerry is quick and easy. Follow our comprehensive guide to make your reservation online securely.

1. Choosing your ferry route

Choosing your itinerary is very important and can greatly influence your travel experience.

Important considerations

When selecting your route, please consider the following points:

  • Duration of crossing: Routes can vary from 30 minutes to over 24 hours. Think about your comfort over long periods at sea.
  • Frequency of departures: Some routes offer hourly departures, others only a few times a week. More frequency means more flexibility.
  • Port accessibility: Check transport connections to and from ports. A more remote port may offer better connections or lower prices. Some routes offer spectacular views.
For example, the Norwegian fjords or the Greek islands can make your crossing a tourist experience in its own right.
  • Ship size: Larger ships offer more stability and service, but smaller ferries can reach more remote destinations.

Tip: For long ferry crossings, consider overnight departures. You will save a night’s hotel accommodation and arrive refreshed at your destination.

Explore ferry destinations

Our complete guide to ferry destinations will help you explore in depth :

  • The most spectacular itineraries
  • Little-known island destinations
  • The best times to visit each region
  • Must-see attractions around each port

2. Selecting your travel dates

Your choice of dates can have a significant impact on your budget and your travel experience.

Flexibility and pricing

Flexibility is your best bet for good prices:

  • Days of the week: Tuesday-Thursday crossings are generally 20-30% cheaper than weekend crossings.
  • Seasonality: Fares can double during school vacations. If possible, travel out of season for substantial savings.
  • Departure times: Very early morning or late evening crossings are often cheaper.
  • Special offers: Sign up for our newsletter to be informed of special discounts.

Tip: Use the full-month search function if available. You may discover cheaper fares on dates you wouldn’t have thought of.

Consult ferry schedules

Our dedicated ferry timetable page offers you:

  • An interactive calendar showing frequencies by route
  • Information on seasonal variations in timetables
  • Alerts on schedule changes due to weather conditions

3. Choose your ferry ticket type

The type of ferry ticket you choose can have a big influence on your flexibility and ticket price.

Ferry ticket options

Standard ticket:
  • Non-changeable and non-refundable
  • Fixed date and time
  • No changes allowed without charge
  • The least expensive, but the most restrictive
Semi-flexible ticket:
  • Changes possible for a fee
  • Date/time changes permitted with advance notice (often 24-48h before departure)
  • Partial refund possible with cancellation fee
  • Average price
Flexible ticket:
  • Free changes up to a certain time limit before departure (often up to a few hours before)
  • Date/time changes free of charge
  • Refunds possible for a small fee
  • More expensive than standard and semi-flexible tickets
Promotional ticket:
  • Generally non-changeable and non-refundable
  • May have restrictions on travel dates or times
  • Often the least expensive, but with the least flexibility

Type of accommodation

Your choice of onboard accommodation is crucial, especially for long crossings:

  • Lounge seating: The cheapest option, comfortable for short daytime crossings.
  • Inside cabin: Ideal for relaxing, but with no view of the outside. Perfect for night crossings if you are a good sleeper.
  • cabins with portholes: More spacious, with a sea view. Recommended for those prone to seasickness.
  • Suite: For maximum comfort, often with extra services included.

Also consider adapted cabins: family, PRM, pet-friendly.

Tip: For overnight crossings, a cabin is a worthwhile investment. You will arrive totally relaxed, and avoid a night in a hotel.

Understanding ferry prices

Our ferry price guide details:

  • Each company’s pricing structure
  • Frequent surcharges (fuel, port taxes)
  • Discounts available (children, seniors, students, military)
  • Strategies for getting the best fares

4. Add extras to your ferry booking

Customize your trip to make it more comfortable and enjoyable.

Meals on board

Dining options depend on the ship:

  • Restaurant: For a gourmet experience, book in advance.
  • Buffets: Offer a wide variety at a fixed price. Ideal for families.
  • Cafeterias and snack bars: For quick, economical meals.
  • Meal menus: Often less expensive if booked in advance with your ticket.

Tip: If you have dietary restrictions, contact us in advance to make sure suitable meals are available.

Extra services

Upgrade your comfort with extras:

  • VIP lounge access: Quiet area, drinks and snacks included, sometimes showers available.
  • Wi-Fi package: Often cheaper if booked in advance. Check coverage, which can be limited out at sea.
  • Children’s activities: Children’s clubs, playgrounds, sometimes even swimming pools on larger ferries.
  • Spa and wellness: Some larger ships offer massage and beauty services.

Tip: Compare the cost of extras booked in advance with on-board rates. Advance booking is often advantageous.

5. Enter passenger information

This step is absolutely essential for trouble-free boarding:

  • First and last names: Exactly as on identity documents.
  • Dates of birth: Necessary for reduced prices (children, seniors).
  • Identity document numbers: Passport or identity card, depending on destination.
  • Nationality: May influence boarding formalities.
  • Vehicle information: Make, model, registration number, precise dimensions.
  • Special needs: Reduced mobility, allergies, etc.

Tip: Keep your identity documents to hand when booking to avoid data entry errors.

6. Booking payment and confirmation

Last step, but not the least:

  • Verification: carefully review all details before confirming.
  • Payment options: Credit card, payment in 4 instalments depending on country of residence, bank transfer (for very early bookings).
  • Travel insurance: Consider adding insurance, especially for long journeys or expensive tickets.
  • Confirmation: You will receive a confirmation email. Print it out or download it to your smartphone.

Tip: Some bank cards offer travel insurance. Check your benefits before adding additional insurance.

After booking, take note of check-in and boarding details. Each port has its own procedures and deadlines.

By following these detailed steps, you’ll be ready for a stress-free ferry crossing. Don’t forget that our customer service is available to answer any specific questions you may have. We wish you a pleasant journey!

Tips for successful ferry bookings

A well-planned booking is the key to a pleasant, stress-free ferry journey. Here are some essential tips to optimize your booking and anticipate every aspect of your crossing.

Best time to book

The timing of your booking can have a significant impact on fares and availability.

  • Early booking: For popular routes, especially during high season (summer, school vacations), book 3 to 6 months in advance. You’ll often benefit from preferential fares and a better choice of cabins.
  • Last minute: If your schedule is flexible, keep an eye out for last-minute offers, especially out of season. Some companies offer substantial discounts to fill their ferries.
  • Days of the week: Bookings made in the middle of the week (Tuesday-Thursday) can sometimes benefit from lower fares.
  • Promotional periods: Watch out for sales periods such as Black Friday or the January flash sales. Many ferry companies offer substantial discounts at these times.

Tip: Use our multi-date price comparison tool. Often, shifting your trip by a day or two can make a significant difference to the fare.

Necessary documents

Prepare your documents in advance to avoid any last-minute stress.

  • Identification: Passport or identity card, depending on your destination. Make sure they are valid for the duration of your stay.
  • Visa: Check visa requirements for your destination, even within the EU for non-Europeans.
  • Ticket: Print out your booking confirmation or download it to your smartphone. Some ferry companies offer electronic boarding passes.
  • Travel insurance: Although optional, it is strongly recommended. Keep a copy of your insurance policy with you.
  • Driving license: Essential if you are taking a vehicle with you. An international license may be required in some countries.
  • Vaccination booklet: May be required for certain destinations, especially outside the EU.

Tip: Make digital copies of all your documents and e-mail them to yourself. In the event of loss, you will always have access to this crucial information.

Groups Booking

  • Contact our customer service department directly for preferential rates (usually for groups of 10 or more).
  • Book early, as space for large groups is limited.
  • Ask if special services are available (group meals, meeting rooms on board).

People with Reduced Mobility (PRM)

  • Please inform us or indicate your specific needs when you book.
  • Please select a cabin adapted for PRM, as these are limited in number.
  • Ask about assistance services for boarding and disembarking.
    – Check the accessibility of on-board facilities (elevators, adapted toilets).

Travelling with pets

  • Keep track of the type and number of pets. Check the ferry company’s pet policy (size, breed, number allowed).
  • Book a pet-friendly cabin if available, or find out where pets are allowed.
  • Prepare the necessary documents (vaccination booklet, European pet passport).
  • Ask about on-board facilities for pets (exercise areas, water bowls)

Families with childern

  • Look out for special family offers (children free of charge, reduced fares).
  • Book family cabins if available.
  • Ask about children’s services on board (play areas, kids’ clubs, special menus).
  •

Travelers with sporting equipment or trailers

  • When booking your ferry, you must indicate whether you are carrying bulky equipment (bicycles, surfboards, etc.).
  • Check for any supplements and specific transport regulations.

Tip: For any special requests, it’s best to contact our customer service department directly. They will be able to guide you in a more personalized way and ensure that all your needs are taken into account.

By following this advice and anticipating your specific needs, you will ensure a smooth booking and a pleasant ferry journey right from the start. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and request clarification from the ferry company or our customer service department. A well-prepared trip is the guarantee of a successful travel experience!

Modification and cancellation options

Flexibility is crucial when planning a ferry trip. Understanding change and cancellation options will help you travel with peace of mind, knowing that you can deal with the unexpected.

General policies

Modification and cancellation policies vary according to the ferry company and the type of ticket chosen. Here’s an overview of common practices:

  • Modifications

Standard tickets: Generally modifiable for a fee, often between €10 and €50 per modification.
    Promotional tickets:
Often not modifiable or with higher fees.
    Deadlines:
Most ferry companies allow changes up to 48 hours before departure.

  • Cancellations

Full refund: Rare, except for flexible tickets or in cases of force majeure.
Partial refund: Common for cancellations made well in advance of departure (30 days or more).
Credit notes: Many ferry companies offer credit notes valid for 12 to 18 months rather than refunds.

  • Practical Advice

1.Read the terms and conditions when booking. They are displayed at the last stage before booking confirmation.
2.Take note of the deadlines for making changes free of charge, generally between 24 hours and 7 days after booking, depending on the ferry company selected.
3.Keep your booking number and customer service contact details to hand.

  • Example of a flexible policy

Some ferry operators have introduced “flex tickets” which offer:

    • Free and unlimited changes up to 24 hours before departure.
    • Cancellation with refund up to 48 hours before departure
    • Surcharges of around 15-20% on standard fares

Travel insurance for your ferry booking

Taking out travel insurance when booking your ferry ticket can considerably increase your flexibility and peace of mind.

  • Types of cover relevant to ferry travel

Trip cancellation: Reimburses non-recoverable expenses in the event of cancellation for covered reasons.
Trip Interruption: Covers costs if you have to shorten your trip.
Ferry delayed: Reimburses costs incurred as a result of a long ferry delay.

  • Benefits specific to ferry crossings

    1. Coverage of accommodation costs in the event of a cancelled crossing due to weather conditions.
    2. Protection against strikes by ferry company employees.

  • Important points to consider

Deductible: Check the amount of the deductible, which can vary from €0 to €150 depending on the policy.
Reimbursement ceilings: Make sure they correspond to the value of your trip.
Exclusions: Read exclusion clauses carefully, particularly concerning extreme weather conditions.

  • Expert Advice

Opt for “cancellation for any reason” insurance. Although more expensive (around 20-30% more than standard insurance), it allows you to cancel for virtually any reason, offering maximum flexibility.

  • Cost/ Benefit comparison

Average cost of travel insurance: 4-8% of total trip cost. Potential savings: Up to 100% of non-refundable costs in the event of cancellation.

In conclusion, while modification and cancellation options may seem like a detail when booking, they can make a significant difference in the event of unforeseen circumstances. Evaluate your flexibility needs carefully, and don’t hesitate to invest in insurance or a changeable ticket if your situation requires it. The peace of mind this brings can greatly enhance your travel experience right from the planning stage.

Planning your ferry trip after booking

After booking your ferry crossing, meticulous preparation will ensure a smooth journey. Here are the essential steps to ensure that everything runs smoothly, from your home to your destination.

Checklist before departure

Drawing up a comprehensive checklist will save you a lot of hassle. Here are the essential items you shouldn’t forget:

Documents

1. Ferry tickets (printed and digital version)

2. Valid identity papers (passport or ID card depending on destination)

3. Driving license (if traveling with a vehicle)

4. Travel insurance documents

5. Pet health record (if traveling with a pet).

Luggage

1. Suitcases labeled with your contact details

2. Handbag containing essentials for the crossing

3. Personal medication (with prescriptions if necessary)

4. Chargers for electronic devices

5. Clothing suitable for the weather at your destination

Vehicle (if applicable)

- Up-to-date technical control

- Checked oil level and tire pressure

- Warning triangle and safety vests

- Green international insurance card

Comfort on board

- Travel pillow and light blanket

- Book or tablet for entertainment

- Drinks and snacks (check what is allowed on board)

- Cash money for on-board purchases

Practical tip: pack a small bag with essentials for the ferry crossing, especially if you are traveling with a vehicle that will be parked in the hold. This will save you a lot of to-ing and fro-ing during the journey. To plan your trip and discover the best attractions in your destination, consult Visit Europe, your trusted guide to exploring Europe.

Ferry Boarding Procedures

Understanding boarding procedures will save you time and reduce stress on D-Day.

Arrival at the port

  • Arrive at least 90 minutes before departure for pedestrians, 2 hours for vehicles.
  • Follow the signage to find the right terminal and queue for your ticket type.

Check-in

  • Have your documents ready (tickets, ID).
  • Collect your boarding pass and any cabin tickets.
  • For vehicles, you will be shown the queue to join.

Security checks

  • Be prepared to pass through a metal detector (just like at an airport).
  • Your luggage will be scanned. Avoid bringing prohibited items.

Boarding

  • Follow port personnel’s instructions for boarding.
  • If you’re traveling with a vehicle, carefully follow the directions for parking it in the hold.

On Board

  • Locate emergency exits and assembly points.
  • Familiarize yourself with the services available (restaurants, stores, etc.).

Tip: If you suffer easily from seasickness, request a cabin amidships, close to the waterline, where movements are less perceptible.

What to do if the ferry is delayed or cancelled

Despite meticulous preparation, the unexpected can happen. Here’s how to react effectively:

In the event of a ferry delay

  1. Check the ferry company’s notice boards or app for updates.
  2. Contact customer service to find out the new estimated departure time.
  3. If the delay is long (more than 90 minutes), ask for compensation (meals, accommodation).
  4. Inform your family and friends or your accommodation at destination of the delay.

In the event of trip cancellation

  1. Go immediately to the ferry company ticket office or call customer service.
  2. Request re-routing on the next available crossing.
  3. If no alternative is available during the day, ask for accommodation and meals.
  4. Keep all receipts for future claims.
  • Under European regulations, you are entitled to compensation in the event of a long delay or cancellation, except in exceptional circumstances.
  • Amounts vary according to the length of the delay and the distance of the crossing.

By anticipating these situations and knowing your options, you’ll be able to face the unexpected with peace of mind. Remember that the ferry company’s staff are there to help you, so don’t hesitate to ask them for assistance if you need it. A calm and courteous attitude will help you find solutions more quickly and efficiently.

Frequently asked questions about ferry reservations

Can I book a ferry for the same day?

Yes, you can book a crossing for the same day if there are still places available. However, we strongly advise against this for several reasons: fares are generally 40-60% higher than for advance bookings, and in high season (July-August) or on popular routes to North Africa, ferries are often fully booked several days in advance.

For same-day reservations, use our search engine and filter by today’s date. If seats are available, you will receive your e-tickets immediately. Please note: you must still arrive at the port 2 hours before departure with your vehicle, even if you have just made a reservation.

What is the difference between a ferry and a fast ferry?

A conventional ferry is a large vessel (capacity 500-2000 passengers) that transports vehicles and passengers. Average speed: 20-25 knots (35-45 km/h). Advantages: more stable in rough seas, numerous onboard services (restaurants, cabins, shops), more economical fares. Ideal for long crossings with a vehicle.

A fast ferry (or NGV – High-Speed Vessel) is smaller and faster (35-40 knots or 65-75 km/h) but only carries passengers or a limited number of vehicles. Advantages: crossing time reduced by 30-40%, perfect for short journeys. Disadvantages: more sensitive to weather conditions, often more expensive, frequent cancellations in bad weather, less comfortable. Example: Marseille-Corsica by standard ferry = 12 hours / by NGV = 6-7 hours.

Is it cheaper to book a round trip or two one-way tickets?

In 95% of cases, booking a round trip is 10-20% cheaper than two separate one-way tickets. Companies automatically apply a discount to round-trip tickets to encourage passenger loyalty.

Exception: If you find a flash promotion on a one-way ticket (e.g., a last-minute offer), it may be advantageous to book two separate one-way tickets. Our comparison tool always shows you the most economical option.

Tip: If your return dates are uncertain, book a round trip with a flexible ticket (+$15-20) rather than two one-way tickets. You can still change your return date while benefiting from the reduced round-trip fare.

Do children pay the same price as adults?

No, children’s fares are reduced according to age:

  • Infants (0-2 years): Free or a nominal €5-10 (no assigned seat, must sit on parents’ lap)
  • Children (2-12 years): 30-50% reduction depending on airline and season
  • Teenagers (12-18 years old): Adult fare or 10-20% discount depending on the company

Important: To benefit from the child ticket price, you must enter the date of birth when booking. ID may be requested at boarding to verify age.

For cabins: Children occupy a berth and are counted in the cabin capacity (e.g., 4-person cabin = 2 adults + 2 children maximum).

Family tip: Some companies offer “large family” deals (3+ children) with additional discounts. Contact our group service at +33(0)4 65 84 14 13.

Can we sleep in your car on a ferry?

No, this is strictly prohibited for safety reasons. Vehicle decks are closed and inaccessible during the crossing. They are not heated or properly ventilated and can be dangerous due to gas emissions, ship movement, and emergency risks.

All operators formally forbid access to vehicles while sailing. Security patrols are carried out regularly, and if you are found inside your vehicle, you may face a fine or be disembarked at the next port.

Cost-saving alternatives

  • Reclining seat (€30–€50): a comfortable option for sleeping on overnight crossings

  • Shared inside cabin (€40–€60 per person): more comfort than a seat, cheaper than a private cabin

  • Short crossings (under 6 hours): stay in the free passenger lounges

Exception

On a few very short routes (under 2 hours), access to vehicles may be allowed, but this is rare and depends on the operator.

How to book a ferry for a motorhome over 7 metres long?

Long motorhomes require special attention when booking a ticket. Follow these steps to avoid pricing issues or boarding problems.

Step 1 – Measure your vehicle accurately

Make sure you know the exact dimensions of your motorhome:

  • Total length (from front bumper to rear bumper, including bike rack if fitted)
  • Total height (from the ground to the highest point, including satellite dish or roof equipment)
  • Width with mirrors extended

Step 2 – Select the correct vehicle category

  • 6–7 m: “Long vehicle” fare
  • 7–9 m: “Motorhome” fare
  • 9–12 m: “Large motorhome” fare (may require prior approval)
  • Over 12 m: You must contact our freight service

Step 3 – Book early

Spaces for large motorhomes are limited (around 20–30 spots per ferry). In high season, we strongly recommend booking 3–4 months in advance.

Cost estimate

A 7–9 m motorhome typically costs 2 to 2.5 times more than a standard car.
Example:

  • Car: €150
  • 8 m motorhome: €350–€400

Tip

On our booking engine, select “Motorhome / Van” and enter the exact dimensions. The system will automatically calculate the correct fare and availability.

Do I need to print my ferry tickets or is the e-ticket sufficient?

The e-ticket on your smartphone is sufficient in 90% of cases, but we strongly recommend that you also have a printed backup:
E-ticket accepted:

  • On all modern companies (Corsica Linea, Baleària, GNV, etc.)
  • PDF format received by email after booking
  • Display from your smartphone at check-in
  • QR code can be scanned directly

Why print anyway: your phone battery may be dead at time of check-in
